Spring 2013 Trend: Embellished Ankles

Spring 2013 is the season for embellished ankles.  All of our favorite style icons have been spotted wearing ankle strap sandals for their latest appearances.  These are perfect to go along with the long skirt, high split trend that we will be seeing in full effect this season thanks to J. Lo and her daring Grammy's ensemble.  Ankle straps add so much sex appeal to your shoe game.  I highly recommend getting a pair, or two, or three.

New, New Nicki!

When Nicki Minaj first came on the music scene as a female rapper she dressed very urban and safe.  As she achieved more success and recognition as a legitimate female rapper we saw her develop a more avant garde look.  She became known for flamboyant wigs, colorful cartoon-like ensembles, and the like.  As of late; however, Ms. Minaj has been seen in more ready to wear looks.  Nicki's new look could be the result of a few things.  First, it is rumored that she is now working with a new wardrobe stylist which could be why we are seeing her in more wearable looks.  Second, she and her long time wig stylist parted ways a few months ago.  Third, her new American Idol gig along with her Pepsi endorsement have put her in a new mainstream arena, and she could be trying to rebrand herself.  Either way, the new look is working for her.  What do you think?

Rihanna is Winning

Rihanna has proven to be a very polarizing force in the media. People either love her or hate her. Whichever end of the spectrum you fall on, one thing is for certain: RiRi is getting hers. Feel however you want to about her on again off again relationship, her marijuana smoking, her in your face I really don't care attitude, but the girl is successfully branding herself. Aside from releasing chart topping hits, she has just shown at London Fashion Week as a designer for the British retailer River Island, and has penned a historic deal with MAC cosmetics. Oh and did I mention she's about to start a tour? Although her clothing line isn't available in the US, her MAC line will be. "RiRi Hearts MAC" will have four separate collections throughout 2013. The first item to be released will be a lipstick titled "RiRi Woo" a play on the title of one of MAC's classic colors "Ruby Woo." It will be available for purchase on May 4th and 5th during her shows at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. MAC will be opening a pop up shop to debut the RiRi Hearts MAC line. Who knows what's next for Rihanna but right now she is turning out to be quite the businesswoman. Kudos to you girl!

Spring 2013 Trend

The Spring 2013 Ready to Wear runways were filled with black and white, stripes, and geometric prints. This means that you can go bold with shoes and accessories and also try your hand at mixing prints. Remember when mixing prints that stripes go with almost anything. Add a pop of color to black and white looks with a bright shoe, clutch, or statement jewelry piece. You can also play up the gold hardware trend by adding chunky gold accessories. For colored prints you can always tone down with a black or nude shoe, and add a contrasting clutch. It's all about figuring out what works for you, but don't be afraid of the Spring prints.

NY Style vs. Atlanta Style

A major part of my reasoning for moving to New York was to find my place in the fashion world.  One of the many things that I've discovered thus far is that my personal, everyday style has to be tweaked to accommodate my new surroundings and routine.  The key difference between Atlanta and New York is transportation, which I'm sure comes as no surprise.  In the great city of Atlanta we drive everywhere; hence, we can wear vertiginous heels for the most trivial of outings.  It is a common practice for me to wear 5 inch heels to happy hour to socialize with my friends in Atlanta.  Here, not so much.  There is so much walking involved in my daily commute from Jersey to Manhattan, so there is no way I would be willing to sacrifice the integrity of my shoes or my feet for that matter by wearing stilettos on a daily basis. Fortunately I attend FIT so I am exposed to some of the most stylish people on this great little island known as Manhattan.  Here are a few style notes that I've taken:

It is freakin cold!  Therefore, keeping warm is the first priority.  The best way to do this without looking like the kid from A Christmas Story is to wear layers underneath your clothes.  I wear American Apparel leggings, wool socks, and a tank under everything on the days that the temperature dips down into the teens.

Boots are everything.  Not only because they keep you warm, and you get more wear out of them in this colder climate, but they are the only way I can wear heels at the moment.  The trick is to get a boot with more of a block heel.  Initially I was turned off at the mere thought of a block heeled boot at my age, but they are actually rather trendy and cute here.

Black is the new and the old black.  I fully understand why New Yorkers stereotypically wear a lot of black.  Black is much easier to keep clean in a city where people are constantly bumping into you and the streets are covered with dirty snow that has become dirty slush.  This really just makes it a tad easier to accessorize so that you can add some flair to your look.

Fur is your friend.  *Looks around for PETA reps* Faux fur is permitted, but it has to be good faux fur.  I do not co sign on you wearing poorly imitated fur.

You can make as many fashion mistakes as you want.  The city is moving so fast with so many different people that no one is really even going to notice if you look a mess.  This means you can take fashion risks and really uncover your own style.

Well that's it for now, since I'm still trying to figure out my NY style.
PS: If you are one of the lucky souls with lucky soles that can afford to take a car service or taxi everywhere, then disregard.
